What are Gases?
Gases are one of the four fundamental states of matter, along with solids, liquids, and plasmas. They consist of particles that are far apart compared to liquids and solids. This means that gases have no fixed shape or volume and expand to fill any container they occupy.
Characteristics of Gases
- Compressibility: Gases can be compressed easily due to the significant amount of space between particles.
- Expansion: Gases will expand to fill the entire volume of their container, which is why balloons inflate.
- Low Density: The density of gases is much lower than that of solids and liquids, making them light and able to rise.
- Effusion and Diffusion: Gases can spread out and mix with other gases, which is why you can smell perfume from a distance.
Types of Gases
Gases can generally be classified into two main categories:
- Ideal Gases: These gases follow the ideal gas laws perfectly under all conditions of temperature and pressure. They are a theoretical concept, represented by examples such as helium and neon.
- Real Gases: These gases deviate from ideal behavior, especially at high pressures and low temperatures. Examples include nitrogen and carbon dioxide.
